This was an experiment with the Audio Spectrum effect in After Effects. I learned how to extract keyframes number values from an audio track, in this case Poison by Prodigy. Each audio cue produced a keyframe for me, and I linked a rectangle’s scale property to different frequency bands within the song.
Each rectangle had a slightly random value from the next, so they wouldn’t all be the same height during the music
Each rectangle was also controlled by a master Null layer. Using a simple color control on the null layer, I could easily change the colors and heights of all the bars
In the main comp, my “rectangles” comp is given the Audio Spectrum effect, along with a circular mask. Using the mask lets me ‘wrap’ the bars into a circle, but you can do any shape you want!
